The name "RSS" is a term for a format that spans several different versions of at least two different parallel formats.
The original RSS v.90 came from Netscape as a format for building portals of headlines to mainstream news sites.
Even though a simpler version, 0.91, was developed, it was dropped when Netscape lost interest.
RSS v.91 was picked up by a software company, as the basis for its web logging programs and web-based writing software.
A third was version was designed, based on RDF, called RSS 1.0. by yet another party, but
User Land continued development of its own version, now called v2.0.
